HAITI UPDATE Q3 2019 - Brian & Heather Tucker

Haiti is currently experiencing one of the most difficult times in it’s history. Political instability has led to violence & 20%+ inflation. Because of this, people are really hurting for food & supplies. Schools & hospitals remain closed. Our island of La Gonave, however, has been safe. Our COHH team continues to provide hope to the hurting people around us. Although these months have been very difficult, we are seeing incredible fruit from the seeds planted by you. School's in Session! -Education

L’Ècole Communautaire L’Espoir D’Haïti (COHH School) is one of very few schools open in Haiti this year 2019-2020. On September 9th 45 students had registered. Today, Nov. 22nd, 100 students are in 7th-10th grades. Dozens of students continue to return to their families from the mainland, as mainland schools are closed. Our new “High School” (and 1st!) class of 10th grade students are flourishing. We’ve added Chemistry, Trigonometry, Economics, P.E., & Computer/Informatics for the 1st time, as well as new teachers capable of teaching those things. Brian is working as the English & Life Skills teacher, AND Co-Principal/Administrator. COHH School has a bright future! Family restoration is a key mission of COHH (Malachi 4:5-6). We’re watching this happen before our eyes as boats of children return to their families…..and The Lord is using COHH School as the catalyst for this action.

COHH chicken, duck, & guinea fowl population has outgrown our current location; thanks to Ryan, Sammy, & our local poultry team. Demand for eggs each day is much greater than our supply. Our hens are getting older, so it’s time to replace them. We built 3 12’x30’ chicken houses on COHH’s farm land. Our goal: produce 500 eggs daily, all while reducing feed costs thru planting local grains (sorghum, moringa) on the mission’s 116+ acres. Our 3 hogs will have piglets in December. We have laid foundation for 1+ acre hog farm, as well.

Needs/Prayers: 2019: Finish chicken houses, hog pens. Buy 200 new layer hens. 2020: Tractor. Fence 100 acre fields. Install Irrigation. Full-time staff – Agriculture Expert.

Community Care – Love your Neighbor

Medical needs grow each month. We’re seeing more & more people show up at our doorstep. Meeting people in their hurt with compassionate (but basic) care has impacted our community (and us) greatly.

COHH is helping Global Partners (Wesyelan) finish a church in neighboring Bodin; we’re installing a roof, floor, doors, & windows this month. The people of the congregation are making gravel & carrying it by bucket to help us out. So humbling…

Solar electrical power is almost updated. The final piece (battery) is finally on the way! Impact: Education via Computer lab & internet tower (literacy, typing, computer training), music school, ice production, fish distribution, & water treatment/filtration will all finally be able to function. Advancement in education & job creation will finally be a reality!

Needs/Prayers: 2019: We need an electrical expert to connect/install all systems. 2020: Water Desalination system (Hydrovolt SQN portable all-in-one system), Medical Mission teams & local phycisian – nurse staffing for medical care.

Ongoing Projects

1. ELECTRICITY Renewable power is a key piece to COHH's sustainability plans. Local welders installed solar panel racking on the Mission Home's roof in March, for 72 solar panels. A 14kW inverter arrived, as well. We're waiting shipment of a solar battery. This system will power Clean Drinking Water Filtration, Ice Block Production, Music School & House of Prayer use, Computer Lab, Future Fish storage, & all Mission home, Pier/Boat Dock, future Medical care, & playground needs...as well as potential for future Municipal power.

2. PIER & BOAT In March, we paved 250 feet of COHH's 450 ft. long pier. Rock removed from COHH farmland was used. A boat lift for COHH's boat "Sons of Thunder" is being constructed, to be completed in June. We hope to open the Dock to Fuel distribution & Fish transport in September. Our local fisherman cannot wait for COHH to assist them with better, sustainable fishing methods. We purchased a GPS for the boat to assist them with future FAD placement to attract larger migratory fish, which will help reef fish, lobster, & conch population heal from severe overfishing.

3. FARMLAND 12 acres of farmland were fenced in April. Our Water Well was completed, which will irrigate newly fenced land with on-site drip irrigation; pumps & lines hope to be installed in August. 1000's of tons of rock was removed from farmland in March & April.
