Haiti is one of the most deforested countries in the world. An estimated 94% of all trees have been clear-cut; leading to erosion of top soil & reef destruction due to silt covering the reefs. La Gonave island has now become the major charcoal supplier to mainland Haiti since the mainland has little wood available to cut. COHH is partnering with our communities & charcoal suppliers to replant fast-growing, soil-conserving trees. We also aspire to plant food-bearing plants for our communities & "green manure" plants to help with agriculture & livestock. The film, "The Man who Planted Trees" is an excellent inspiration to our vision for this project.

The Man Who Planted Trees (French title L'homme qui plantait des arbres), also known as The Story of Elzéard Bouffier, The Most Extraordinary Character I Ever Met, and The Man Who Planted Hope and Reaped Happiness, is an allegorical tale by French author Jean Giono, published in 1953.
